68 Years: The Reign of Queen Elizabeth II

On 6th February 1952 Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne upon the death of her father King George VI. Today marks 68 years since that event. At only 25 years of age, the Queen was young when she took on her role, but as we look back on her reign, it is clear that she has carried out her role with dedication and grace. I think what is remarkable is the way she has modernised the monarchy slowly over time, so that it is hard to pinpoint any one change or event that has been pivotal, instead it is more of a gradual evolution. This method has ensured decisions are made with careful thought and calculated rationality.

The Queen has maintained her dignity, whilst also showing us part of her character and personality when she feels it is right. Her sense of humour and fun shown when taking part in the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony springs to mind as one example. The Queen keeps going each and every day with her determined sense of duty, mixed with a maturity to adapt when necessary. She has selflessly served this country and her other realms and territories, and the Commonwealth.

Why do I think Her Majesty has succeeded so well? I think it comes down to her family who understand and support her, and enable her to reach a wider group of people through their representation of her (so I sincerely hope that any models of a slimmed down monarchy in the future enable as many of us to have a connection to the sovereign and royal family). The way the Queen surrounds herself with a few trusted friends, and loyal staff. Thirdly, her personal faith in Jesus that gives her an inner strength, evidenced in her Christmas Speeches and attendance at church every Sunday no matter where she is in the world. So thank you, Your Majesty, for your last 68 years of service. Long to reign over us, God Save the Queen!
