Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, turned 97 on Sunday 10th June, just a few days ago. He has led an extraordinary life. Now retired, he dedicated himself to serving the Queen and the country when he married the then Princess Elizabeth on 1947. Just 5 years later his wife became Queen. Prince Philip and the Queen did not expect for her to become head of state so early on in her life and their marriage, but her father died of lung cancer in his 50’s. Prince Philip gave up his successful navy career to support the Queen. He renounced his claim to the Greek throne and royal title to become British citizen before his marriage, and was given the title Duke of Edinburgh. The Queen made him an official British Prince in 1957, so he regained the title of, “Prince,” once more. He has forged his own job role as Prince Consort, becoming the patron of and supporting a variety of charities, events and organisations. He leaves his legacy as the longest serving Prince Consort, and with the Queen, having the longest royal marriage between a sovereign and consort. He has also the legacy of the Duke of Edinburgh award that he created to help young people achieve something worthwhile and learn new skills, whilst also contributing to the community around them. Prince Philip grew up as a prince in exile, but has always been strong and confident in himself. No doubt he is enjoying his well-earned retirement, and a chance to spend time with family and pursue his hobbies.
